History & Culture

Established in 1966, four years after Vail Ski Resort opened, the Vail valley was once a summer retreat for the Ute Indians. Years later Pete Seibert a former 10th Mountain Division soldier and Earl Eaton a local rancher hiked Vail Mountain and envisioned the largest ski resort in America. After the completion of the Eisenhower tunnel in 1972, Vail became easily accessible from the Front Range and situated itself among the world’s best and most luxurious ski resort towns.
